Nevada Becomes The First State To Test Fully Automated Passenger Drones

The China-based manufacturer of a fully automated, passenger-carrying transportation drone was given permission on Monday to run test flights in Nevada, marking the first time such technology has come to the United States.

Ehang, Inc., unveiled its prototype Ehang 184 drone at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in January. That’s where Mark Barker, business director for the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems — the state-sponsored nonprofit group that approved Ehang’s request — first encountered the vehicle.

“It caught everybody’s attention,” Barker told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Since then, Nevada officials and Ehang representatives have been working toward a partnership. Now, with official government approval to test within the state, Barker and his associates at the institute can help the Chinese company achieve accreditation under Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) guidelines.

“We will help them submit necessary test results and reports to the FAA and all that kind of stuff,” Barker said. “It’s a big deal to Ehang and it’s a big deal for NIAS and the state of Nevada because we will be helping them to test and validate their system.”

Compact and lightweight — the Ehang 184 is only four feet tall and weighs under 450 lbs — the vehicle would target short- to medium-range transportation needs for single passengers at a time.

After hopping into the cab and customizing settings such as lighting and temperature, passengers enter their destination into a touchscreen, tap a button, then sit back and enjoy the flight.

Governmental drone regulation has proved tricky, as officials try to balance the benefits of what the growing commercial industry can offer against the inherent dangers of this largely untested technology.

But many see bright days ahead for the future of commercial drone manufacturers.

“Passenger drones have huge potential,” Dr. Mirko Kovac, director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London, told the BBC.

They can decrease congestion, offer flights in challenging environments and in developing countries where the road infrastructure is not as developed.

While acknowledging that, currently, “people are afraid of drones” — most notably due to UAVs fast becoming an icon of military combat — Dr. Kovac feels those fears will eventually be put aside.

“I think society will overcome this once the technology is more proven,” he told the BBC.

As for Ehang’s choice of Nevada as their testing ground, that decision makes perfect sense. The state has long been lobbying to bring what it sees as an industry on the rise within its borders.

Citing a report by the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), a 2015 article by Nevada Business magazine claimed that “Integration of unmanned aerial vehicles into the U.S. would create more than 100,000 jobs and have an economic impact of $82 billion nationally by 2025.”

Tom Wilczek, of the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, sees an opportunity. “Even if we only see 10 percent or only capture 10 percent of the market, that’s $9 billion,” he said of AUVSI’s numbers.

And the state appears ready to accommodate.

Already, Nevada is one of only six sites FAA-authorized to conduct trial research on UAVs. And more and more, universities and private nonprofits are working with state lawmakers to hammer out the best way to cultivate what signs suggest could soon be a booming industry.

“That’s what’s really exciting about it,” University of Nevada-Reno’s Warren Rapp told the Nevada Appeal back in January. “It’s a whole new chapter for Nevada.”

Robots Kill 60,000 Jobs At Just One Factory As 40% Of Labor Faces Extinction

Human labor is worth less than ever at the notorious Foxconn factory.

The company, known for producing Apple products and other American consumer electronics, was already notorious for driving workers to suicide at its Shenzhen, China location and prompting suicide nets outside the buildings.

Now, the rise of robots and automation is displacing a staggering 60,000 of its 110,000 strong workforce at a Foxconn factory in Taiwan, delivering a fatal blow to largely migrant wage earners.

CNBC reports:

Thirty-five Taiwanese companies, including Apple’s supplier Foxconn, spent a total of 4 billion yuan (HK$4.74 billion) on artificial intelligence last year, according to the Kunshan government’s publicity department

“The Foxconn factory has reduced its employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000, thanks to the introduction of robots. It has tasted success in reduction of labor costs,” said the department’s head Xu Yulian.

“More companies are likely to follow suit.”

As many as 600 major companies in Kunshan have similar plans, according to a government survey.

FreeCreditCardKnifeThe job cuts do not augur well for Kunshan, which had a population of more than 2.5 million at the end of 2014, two-thirds of whom were migrant workers.

This trend of dying jobs is today displacing Chinese workers, but is on course to catch up to everyone and poses a realistic and frightening threat to American jobs as well. Today it is manufacturing, but tomorrow it will impact truckers, waitresses, secretaries and soon, nearly every sector.

If workers are displaced from one industry, they are driven to compete for jobs in other areas, creating additional pressure on applicants, and raising the question of where people will go if/when no more jobs are available.

If the future is automated, what happens to humans? How will they earn a living?

The answer is a conundrum, as robots do promise to do much of the labor that has been menial and, well, depressing to do – as Foxconn’s suicide factories demonstrate.

But with experts predicting that 40% of all existing human jobs will be wiped out by robots and automation, it may yet be a dark future.

Bill Holter from JS Mineset is back to help us document the collapse for the fourth week of May, 2016. And as physical gold and silver moves East and intothe strong hands of more than a billion Chinese, and as foreign banks publicly settle global trade in the Yuan, Bill reminds us that “Every step forward by China, is one or two steps backward for the US and the Dollar, that’s what’s happening. For instance, if the Yuan is backed by gold, then why would someone accept the Dollar in lieu of the Yuan if the Dollar’s not backed by anything.” The build out of the infrastructure for the world to move completely away from the Dollar is almost complete. The allegations renew concerns about unsafe food in China following abuses that have included fox DNA found in donkey meat and the lacing of baby formula with melamine, a compound used in plastics.

TSA WHISTLEBLOWER: NEW PHONE RULE IS MORE SECURITY THEATER, WILL MAKE FLIERS LESS SAFE

TSA WHISTLEBLOWER: NEW PHONE RULE IS MORE SECURITY THEATER, WILL MAKE FLIERS LESS SAFE

Power-up policy will make it easier to get explosives through checkpoints
TSA Whistleblower: New Phone Rule Is More Security Theater, Will Make Fliers LESS Safe

A former TSA agent has described the new rule mandating fliers to power up electrical devices at the TSA’s behest as “absurdist” and “theatrical”, saying it will not prevent any terrorist wanting to set off a bomb, and will likely make it easier to do just that. Writing in the London Guardian, Jason Edward Harrington, a former TSA agent at Chicago’s O’Hare International, notes how he knew this rule may come into effect, and even wove it into a satirical piece he wrote on the TSA a year ago. Now a whistleblower and a blogger, Harrington writes “I knew a checkpoint power-up directive was not at all outside the realm of airport-security possibility, because I was a TSA agent for six years – and the TSA can be as reactionary and absurd as it is technologically inept.”

“It should come as no surprise to you when this new measure joins the never-ending parade of blanket security directives that may actually make us less safe.” Harrington adds.

The Department of Homeland Security claims that there is a “credible threat” that has motivated the move to force those flying to the US from overseas to switch on their mobile phones and other electronic devices at checkpoints. However, it has only issued vague guidelines that all electrical devices must be charged up before travel to prove to security officials that they do not contain explosives.

Exactly what happens if they do contain explosives and are powered up is not explained.

Presumably, the DHS is on the look out for fake devices, disguised as everyday electrical objects, that are really bombs. However, as whistleblower Harrington notes, this makes little sense.

“If a group of terrorists is clever enough to pack explosives inside a laptop to make them undetectable by current technology, wouldn’t they be clever enough to devise an explosive laptop that can do all of this … and still appear to power up?” he notes, adding “wouldn’t they have just done that from the beginning?”

“…most post-9/11 airport security rules: the logic behind them is a race to the bottom.” Harrington adds.

Harrington urges that the reason the new policy will make flyers less safe is because “Nearly all of the security workforce, in all likelihood, will be mindlessly waving through passengers with powered-up electronics.”

“When you work front-line security with an inflexible checklist as your guide, you find it’s easy to let critical thinking take a backseat to basic standard operating procedure compliance.” he adds.

“Absurd, ham-handed security rules are ceaselessly drilled into the minds of TSA screeners as the only way to ensure the American way of life.”

“There’s nothing good about fostering complacency that allows for screeners to thoughtlessly regard as “safe” all items that fall within a rigid set of security parameters.” Harrington eloquently explains. Read More

AIRPORT SECURITY: YOU WON’T FLY TO THE US IF YOUR MOBILE PHONE BATTERY IS DEAD
British Airways says it will turn away passengers booked on US-bound flights if their electrical devices will not switch on
Airport security: you won't fly to the US if your mobile phone battery is dead

Holidaymakers and business travelers who arrive at airport security with uncharged mobile phones or other electrical items will be stopped from boarding planes bound for the United States and effectively treated like “terrorists”. British Airways said passengers who failed to turn on devices when asked will be immediately banned from their US flight and have to reschedule, even if they offer to abandon the item or send it on separately. Britain’s main airline warned that even a new device bought in the airport lounge after passing through security will have to be charged up or the passenger will not be allowed to board at the gate. Any transfer passenger whose device has gone flat on the first leg will also be prevented from their onward travel unless they can recharge first.

It is the toughest stance taken since America ordered extra security checks on direct flights amid fears al-Qaeda has developed a new bomb that can evade current controls. It was announced on the ninth anniversary of the 7/7 terrorist bombings in London.

RECORD 92,120,000 AMERICANS NOT WORKING, NOT LOOKING

SOURCE: CNS NEWS

The number of Americans 16 and older who did not participate in the labor force climbed to a record high of 92,120,000 in June, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

This means that there were 92,120,000 Americans 16 and older who not only did not have a job, but did not actively seek one in the last four weeks.

That is up 111,000 from the 92,009,000 Americans who were not participating in the labor force in April.

In June, according to BLS, the labor force participation rate for Americans was 62.8 percent, matching a 36-year low. The participation rate is the percentage of the population that either has a job or actively sought one in the last four weeks.

In December, April, May, and now June, the labor force participation rate has been 62.8 percent.

Before December, the last time the labor force participation rate sank as low as 62.8 percent was in February 1978, when it was also 62.8 percent. At that time, Jimmy Carter was president.

Negative Interest Rates Coming To USA, Americans Will Be Forced To Pay Just To Keep Their Money In The Bank

ECONOMIST: U.S. BANKS PREPARING TO CHARGE CUSTOMERS FOR DEPOSITS

Negative interest rates coming to USA

BofA Logo

by PAUL JOSEPH WATSON

In the week that the European Central Bank cut its deposit rate for banks from zero to -0.1%, economist Martin Armstrong warns that negative interest rates are coming to the United States, meaning that Americans will be forced to pay just to keep their money in the bank.

In a move described as unprecedented, the ECB became the first central bank in history to cut any main interest rate to negative yesterday, part of a package of measures designed to encourage banks to provide more loans to businesses and households. Many view the policy as a desperate sign of Europe’s faltering economic recovery.

Critics claim that the action will do little to spur growth while threatening to cause inflation and unemployment. While banks in the EU have not indicated whether or not the costs will be passed on to consumers, the New York Times’ Neil Irwin asserts that this is inevitable.

“Banks will most likely pass these negative interest rates on to consumers, or at least try to. They may try to do so not by explicitly charging a negative interest rate, but by paying no interest and charging a fee for account maintenance,” he writes.

What about Americans? Will they also soon be charged by the bank simply for depositing their own money? Yes, according to economist Martin Armstrong.

Armstrong, who is noted for calling the 1987 economic crash to the very day, warns that U.S. banks are preparing a raft of new account fees that will serve as a de facto negative interest rate.

“In the USA, we are more-likely-than-not going to get the negative rates directly passed to consumers by the banks who will claim it is the Fed who will do so at the requests of the banks. Larry Summers has set the stage. This is just how it works. He flew the balloon to get everyone ready. This is likely to be bullish for the stock market,” writes Armstrong, noting that, “The talk behind the curtain is to impose negative interest rates on the consumer.”
